Home at last jiggitty jig
What a day of travel. We checked out of our room at 04:50. Transfer to the airport was at 05:50. We had the usual stops at a couple more resorts. All this for a 09:20 flight, all went well for us if you don't mind listening to people complain about stopping at other resorts. Unless you take a cab this is pretty standard. Of course the same people didn't mind pushing Dianne who was holding a sleeping Anika out of the way to get on the transfer bus. As usual Karma eventually caught up to them, when we were ushered to the front of the line because of the kids. The flight was supposed to be seven and a half hours long, but luckily it was only seven. Front of the line through customs and luggage pick up. Even through the last customs check without any machete questions. Whew...Karma people karma. We noticed that the people who pushed in front of us were behind us at every turn. The southern Rumbles picked us up at the Calgary airport. It was so great to see our family when we got back to Canada. Then it was into the van for the next leg of our journey to Dianne's parents house to celebrate the momentous event of Ross's 70th birthday. We had a great meal complete with cake and ice cream. Everyone got back into the van this time including Kelsey who stood at the door as soon as we got our shoes on. We got to the house around 10ish. Ahhhh...........it's so nice to be at home in our own bed............but who's going to do all this laundry? And who turned off the heat in Edmonton?

Rental return
Today I left the resort to return the car and get souvenirs. The car broke down for the final time today, had to call a mechanic, better today than on the road to Meches. Got that all straightened out then Brad and I took his bike to the grocery store. Who needs magnets when you can buy rum and machetes, man I love it here. the girls spent another day at the pool bar. hard living for sure. Supper tonight was at the seafood restaurant. WOW WOW WOW the food here is great.

A nice visit
The Pears got a day pass yesterday, and spent the day with us. What a great time, I was a little late in the morning because I met a couple of guys from the eastern Seaboard. Spent more time visiting with them than I planned. So when the Pears got here it was a slow start. Not too slow because Dianne and Anika usually get up in the morning and go for breakfast. When they get back it is usually time for Sydney and I to get up. My girls went to the beach and got braids first thing this morning(read noon). Then we spent a good part of the day at the pool bar, you can never go wrong there, drinks-water what could happen. Dianne took everyone down the beach for paddle boat rides and sea kayaking, Brad and I were going to go but like I said how can you go wrong at the pool bar. After a great day with the Pears I drove them home and got back in time for showtime. When I got there Sydney had won a shirt dancing on stage while I was gone. Anika was asleep and Di wasn't far behind. So they went home and Syd and I partied the night away at showtime. They get up first in the morning and go to bed early, Sydney and I stay up all night and sleep in every morning. same as at home.
More castles
Today the girls were going to go to kids club, and we were going to chill out. Scratch that, Sydney couldn't get into hers and Anika got into a fight. Oh well, there's always the beach. So...........we went to the beach, you know castles, waves good times had by all. the Pears came to see us after lunch, and we had a good visit with them, Dianne and Barb did some sneaky "Charlie's angels" stuff and found out that they can have a day pass at the resort for a very affordable price. After they left the beach we meet a couple from New York and their 3 year old son. Great people it was a nice visit, and good to hear someone else's perspective. We came came home, cleaned up and went for supper at the Japanese restaurant. WOW WOW WOW This is by far my favorite meal yet. Afte rsupper we took the train back to our room and Sydney and Anika got to "drive".............what a thrill!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Keeping a car
Check in was easy, mind you I came at 8am when there were no flights arriving. Our concierge was amazing, he went out of his way to change our room for something better. This was stress free because when we got to our room we didn't unpack and took the kids to the kids club. then Di and I had lots of time to change the room without any hassle. We haven't left the resort every day but having a car is nice sense of freedom. We are not planning any epic journeys but we will have to see what the morning brings us. We have spent the last 2 days building sand castles, it's not as easy as it sounds..................we have Anika helping. We are having trouble catching up to Sydney, everyday she goes to kids club and abandons us for more fun......feeding peacocks, holding iguanas, swimming and playing on the beach. Did we mention it's an awesome resort.

Resort life
Well we have checked in......okay 3 days ago. Resort life is tough and internet is hard to find. We have been very busy trying to eat and drink. Sydney our oldest daugher(6) is having so much fun in kids club we don't get to see her much. We are staying st the Melia resort and it the most kid freindly place we have found so far. Last night Dianne and I went to a local bar that is underground in a cave. It was the rainbow carnival night, what a place. Did I mention it was in a cave.

The road to..............................somewhere
Today we decided to go on road trip. How hard could that be............let me tell ya. I have driven on bad roads, I have driven on back roads, I have driven in heavy traffic, I have 4x4'd in my jeep down quad trails, I have taken my car down roads that trucks wouldn't go, I have driven all over the world, I have even driven in Higuey on a motorcycle, but Higuey traffic in a car is the most whiteknuckle ride I have ever been on!!! These people have a sense of flow that can only come through genetics and osmosis. So that was the start of the day, we went to the Basilica when we finally got parked and it was beautiful. So then we spent 20 minutes finding our way out of the city. We went to El Siebo and onto Meches. We had to cross the interior mountains to get there. WHAT A SHOW. I wanted Dianne to take a video of the experience but she couldn't take her eyes of the road long enough, because she was parailzed with fear. To call hiway number 107 a highway would be a stretch, to call it a country road would be a stretch, to call it a road would be a stretch. When we finally crossed the mountain and got to town, we couldn't get out quick enough. Talked to the regional police and he escorted us out of town. Onto highway number 106, better but not really. The locals here told me not to use this road, aparantly they meant it. Everyone here hisses at everyone we found out why.....................they suck!!!!!

Beer and lobster lifestyle
Today is Wednesday. Yesterday we did a day trip to Macao. Dianne and the girls agreed that it is the most beautiful beach ever!! After some fierce negotiations I bought a sack of lobster for everyone to enjoy. This started with me trying to buy them right out of the boat as it pulled it up. The fisherman and I could not agree on a price so he packed up his lobster and went home.........so Jose and I jumped in the car and drove to his home in the village of Macao. I really got a feel for how they live. But he was having lunch and would not come out of his home. Boy when I upset someone over price they stay upset. So it seemed that all was lost.....I went back to talk to Jose about getting lobster tomorrow but he had managed to get more lobster. So more bartering got us a sack of lobster and I also learned how to cook them dominican style. This involves cleaning them before they are cooked and panfrying them with some spices. The supper was amazing we also fried some veggies and made rice. Life is not complete until you have had lobster fajitas for supper, unfortunately we were out of money again, so today was another trip to the bank. As a side note please leave a comment so we know if anyone is reading this.

We're gonna need a bigger pot
Today was another good day, a bit of a slow start because we went to Steve's last night. We went into town and rented a car. Came back to the house and went for a drive to the beach. Cabasa del toro is the name of the beach it's about 15 min from the house. Luckily it only to took about an hour to get there.......maybe an hour and a half. We crashed a beach at a resort, stayed there for a couple of hours then bought a fish and a lobster. A four and a half pound triggerfish and a pound and a half lobster. I got them for 500 pesos, about $17.45. Then Barb and I cooked it up. There was a bigger lobster but we need to buy a bigger pot if we are going to get one of those bad boys. After supper we were chilling on Brad's patio when a rat ran by.....the worst thing about this is that he had a name HENRY. But this rato's luck ran out when Ronnie the terrier showed up. It was a quick fight.......maybe 15 seconds.......then Ronnie was urinating on the corpse and looking for another.

Home at last jiggitty jig
The greatest laid plans laid to waste again. We should be used to this .......and yet we are not. We were going to leave the house friday morning at 11am. when 1 pm rolled around we knew we were in trouble for our schedual. Stopped by Honey's then grandma and grandpas to drop off our poor old black dog. Read.......going to the spa. Supposed to meet uncle Dude at his house.....that didn't work either.... so we had supper at the airport. Great flight. poor seats. But a little sweet talking got everyone moved into the same row. Had a couple naps on the plane. Some were comfortable some weren't. I didn't like being woke up by Dianne because of my snoring but the rest of the flight did. Arrived in the morning jumped in a cab and we were on the road trip......Brad was waiting at el dorado and now we have a place. Checked in to the apartment it wasn't bad but it needed some extra cleaning. We spent the day at the pool....took Dianne for a tour of the area to show her where we stayed last year. Tomorrow we will rent a car and go to el toro del plaza. Nice quite beach. Oh by the way the sunburns have started but luckily there is an aloe plant outside the door of the apartment.

Getting close
We are getting excited about leaving. For anyone who hasn't travelled with their kids I highly recommend it. It is a very rewarding experience for everyone involved. This is not our first trip to the Dominican or with our kids. Dianne has a great system of buying some new toys and puzzle books from the dollar store. It is a steady stream of distractions that seem to help the flight progress. We have tried direct flights and milk runs..........strongly recommend the direct flight. This will be a direct flight and an overnighter. Hopefully everyone will get some sleep on the plane. We will need to be fresh because we still don't have a place to stay. But we have a lot of faith in Brad and Aaron. READ: PLEASE BARB, HELP US!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
